SIM Leadership Spotlight February 2015

"Leadership Spotlight" includes interviews with Chapter Presidents, SIM Board members, Management Council members and other SIM leaders. "Leadership Spotlight" will not only highlight SIM’s leadership and chapters, but it will offer insight from our leaders on topics, treads and issues facing the Society, our chapters and the IT industry.

SIM Role: Albany Chapter President

1. Please provide an overview of the SIM Albany chapter.

At the moment we have 30 paid members. Our goal is to grow the chapter to 50 members in 2015. In April of 2014 the founding committee for the chapter, jointly with EFM, organized the first Albany SIMposium. We used this conference as a recruiting vehicle. We were also able to get some chapter seed funds from the proceeds of the conference. We had the chapter inaugural meeting in September and our first regular chapter meeting in November. For 2015 we are planning a full agenda including eight chapter meetings, a golf outing, and our second Albany SIMposium.

2. What are your goals for your term as the President of the SIM Albany chapter?

The primary goal is to create a self sustaining chapter that will be a valuable member of the greater SIM family

3. What are the hottest trends in the industry?

“Hot” is perhaps not the right word, but cyber security is becoming more and more a focal point for IT organizations with an impact on all other areas of IT.

4. What challenges is your chapter currently facing?
So far we have not been successful recruiting members from the public sector and academia. Given the significant presence of both in the Greater Capital Region this is a priority for 2015.

5. What is the one piece of advice you will give the next President of the SIM Albany chapter?

Maintaining a healthy chapter requires hard work. The next President should consider adding a “Membership Retention” chair to the Board.

6. What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone who wants to start a SIM chapter?

How about three?
Start with a core of about half a dozen like minded people
Lean heavily on SIM headquarters for advice and guidance. They have been of great assistance to us
Consider a conference (such as our SIMposium) to jump start the chapter
