Teen Tech Camp
Teen Tech Camp is an annual week-long summer program produced by SIM Memphis in partnership with the Memphis Public Library. The purpose of the camp is to help young teenagers get excited about technology while they are still considering their future career opportunities. Perhaps some will choose IT as a career path after participating in the camp!
The camp is targeted at 12-15 year olds and exposes kids to various careers in IT as well as introduces them to emerging technologies. They do hands-on computer programming and incorporate photos, video, and music into their projects. The student group is usually diverse and is comprised mostly of students from public schools. Students interested in attending the camp submit an application along with a recommendation from a teacher. Selected attendees pay nothing to attend.
The camp is held at the Central Library and is operated by Library staff. They solicit applications and select students. They also set the curriculum and provide instructors. SIM participates in the planning, presents daily technology sharing sessions called "Bright Shiny Objects,” attends a lunch with the campers and staff, presents a talk "Careers in IT,” and participates in a recognition ceremony with campers and their families at the conclusion of the camp. The Library submits a budget and SIM provides the funding and makes arrangements for donations of laptops to the camp.
The camp was started in 2005 and has been held at the Library every summer since.
