The inauguration of the Portland's "2016 Premier CIO Forum" will take the place of SIM-PDX's regular October meeting. This event is a collaboration between Premier Events Management(PEM) and SIM-PDX. Proceeds from this event will be used to fund our STEM outreach effort for the 2016-17 session. Please note! This event will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel instead of our regular venue at the Embassy Suites. This day and half event is complementary to all SIM members, prospects and their direct reports and runs through Thursday evening. Your registration will include cocktail and dinner on Wednesday evening as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner the following day.

Tragedy, Redemption and Tools
At OC Tanner, the IT team has recently faced a number of challenges –from new technological competition, low credibility, a broken relationship with the rest of the organization and a non-high-performing culture (that is a kind way to say that the culture was toxic).
Over the course of one year, Niel and his IT team turned this situation around through the use of three simple and immediately-usable tools. These tools aligned IT to the rest of the organization and OC Tanner to the market, significantly improved decision-making (in the midst of significant ambiguity) and built a high-performing culture. Niel explains these three tools (Purpose Alignment, Business Value and Trust Ownership) and also suggests how you can apply them to fit your own transformation needs.
Niel Nickolaisen is the CTO at OC Tanner. He has held technology executive and operations executive positions; typically in turnaround roles. His strategic and tactical alignment model significantly improves returns on technology and business initiatives. He has a passion for helping others deliver on what he calls the dual role of enterprise IT: 1) Enable strategy and 2) Achieve operational excellence.
He holds a MS in Engineering from MIT, a BS in Physics from Utah State University, and an MBA from Utah State University.
He writes an enterprise CIO column for SearchCIO and is a contributor to CIO Magazine. He is the author of “The Agile Culture” (2014, Addison Wesley) and “Stand Back and Deliver” (Addison Wesley, 2009).
Niel is a popular speaker on a variety of IT and leadership topics including IT Alignment, Strategic Planning, Agile Principles, and IT Lean. Twice yearly, he conducts a CIO Mini-Bootcamp that is the highest rated event in the history of the Midsize Enterprise Summit.
