You are invited to submit an abstract for
presentation at the pre-ICIS 2012 SIM Academic Workshop to be held from 9:30 am
to 5 pm on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at the Orlando World Center Marriott,
Orlando, FL. This year’s workshop will include invited and competitive
presentations that focus on the theme: How to Succeed in a World of Big Data.
For this pre-ICIS workshop, and for the
2013 MISQE Special Issue, we invite
researchers to explore the implications of big data for management strategies
and practices, with an emphasis on how IT and business leaders can drive
business value from their digital information.
The intent is to examine the new business opportunities and management
challenges resulting from growing volumes of structured and unstructured data,
generated both internal and external to the enterprise.
We especially encourage submissions based
on in-depth case studies, analyses of key management practices, and field-based
insights on current trends. Submissions viewed most favorably will be those
that provide interesting frameworks, rich illustrations and examples of practices
that can be applied by other executives. Papers addressing topics related to
business intelligence, business analytics, data management or big data, could
focus on (but are not limited to) the following themes:
- Innovative
business uses of data
- Examples
of predictive approaches and their achieved benefits
- Cultural
and behavioral issues raised by big data
- Governance
practices contributing to delivering value through data
- Deriving
business value from social media data
- "Working smarter” practices that help people
use data effectively
- Big
data pitfalls—and how to avoid them
- Special
challenges associated with non-traditional forms of data
- Data
strategy development
- Implications
of mobility for exploiting big data
- Organizational
approaches to developing and sustaining big data skills and capabilities
- Implications
for individual and organizational decision-making processes
