Leadership Spotlight: SIM Wisconsin Chapter,Nelson Still

1.  Please provide an overview of the SIM Wisconsin Chapter.
SIM Wisconsin was formed in 1982. We currently have around 60 members.

We realize the importance of high quality programs in terms of attracting and retaining the right type of members and have made this a focus of our efforts. We have 8 meetings on our calendar for 2017. Read more…

2. What are your goals for your term as President of the SIM Wisconsin Chapter?
During my term as SIM Wisconsin president, I will focus on:

  • Improving the interaction with our members, by better using the social media tools at our disposal to ensure interaction outside of the monthly meeting.
  • Heightening the profile of SIM Wisconsin so we are seen as technology thought leaders by business and technology executives, through image, social media presence and programs. At the same time continue to “do good” through outreach programs, scholarships and charity work.
  • Maintaining, building, encouraging and empowering a strong board which will help to make this the IT think tank we want it to be. We need and welcome your energy and ideas.

3. What are the hottest trends in the industry?
Information security is front and center for most CIO’s, while Cloud computing continues to trend upwards..

Managed services and SaaS solutions continue to grow, enabling companies to avoid wasted effort on commodity functionality and focus more on the things that drive their strategic direction. As IT leaders our job is to help steer that ship because everything comes at a cost - be that reliability, flexibility, control, strategy, integration. Read more…

4.  What challenges is your chapter facing?
We have to compete for people’s attention, not only with other conferences which are often freely available from vendors but also with what appears to be a shrinking amount of time for non-critical activities. So, we have to ensure we provide value-for-time (and money) through networking, educational and altruistic returns. Read more…

5.  What is one piece of advice you will give the next President of the SIM Wisconsin Chapter?
We need to meet our constituents in their convenience zone which nowadays is defined largely by technology. We are always looking to enhance our use of technology to communicate with and engage with our members. The status quo is not protected - leave your mark.

Biometrics And Other Hot Topics At Advanced Practices Council (APC) Meeting
What happens when weak passwords meet proliferating Internet of things devices? According to Dmitry Zhdanov, professor at Georgia State University and cybersecurity expert, it takes hackers only three days to crack any 8 character password, however clever it might be. There are ways around it (i.e., four random words), but companies need better means of authentification. Biometrics may be that better way, given its characteristics of being very difficult to forge. Dmitry walked APC members through the various biometrics forms (e.g., face, fingerprint, hand geometry, retina, iris, behavioral characteristics) as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each. He also foreshadowed what is next (DNA). He ended by suggesting consideration of multifactor authentification, which may be the best option. Cybersecurity as a Growth Advantage: A free interactive webinar for current and prospective SIM members
Cisco recently completed a global study, which included input from more than 1,000 C-suite and line of business executives, and their findings challenge us all to view cybersecurity investment differently. According to their white paper, in this era of digital disruption, companies that make cybersecurity a vital foundation of their digital growth strategies are uniquely positioned to take advantage of new innovation and growth opportunities. In other words, Cisco asserts that cybersecurity investment is actually an enabler of innovation, growth, and competitive advantage.

SIM's National Cybersecurity SIG, in partnership with SIM's Capital Area Chapter, is proud to invite all interested senior IT leaders to a free interactive webinar, which is being held next Thursday, Feb. 15 (7 p.m. EST, 4 p.m. PST). During the webinar, Joel Barbier, one of the primary authors of the white paper, will lead a discussion about their findings. More information about the event and speaker can be found on the event's flyer and on the SIG's website.

SIM membership is not required for this free interactive webinar, so all SIM members are encouraged to invite their non-member colleagues to register, actively participate, and experience the value of SIM and SIG membership.

Register now, before it's too late. Space is limited and spots are going fast.

Chapter Challenge Contest is Back for 2017!
Each year, SIM’s IT Trends Study provides deep insight into the current state of IT in organizations. Click here to access last year’s report and slidedecks if you haven’t already. These insights would not be possible without participation from SIM members like yourself.

The 2017 study will go live in April and we are pleased to announce that $24,000 will be up for grabs in this year’s Chapter Challenge Contest. Your participation in the study can help your chapter win $6,000, $3,000, or $1,500 (for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in either the large or small chapter divisions), not to mention bragging rights as one of the most active SIM chapters in the nation! Every participant also gets a customized personal report comparing their responses to the rest. Stay tuned for more details regarding the study’s launch and this year’s Chapter Challenge Contest.
