SIM Leadership Spotlight March 2014

"Leadership Spotlight" includes interviews with Chapter Presidents, SIM Board members, Management Council members and other SIM leaders.  "Leadership Spotlight" will not only highlight SIM’s leadership and chapters,  but it will offer insight from our leaders on topics, treads and issues facing the Society, our chapters and the IT industry.

1. Please provide an overview of the SIM Chicago chapter.

The Central Connecticut chapter has been in existence for about 25 years and currently has 127 members.  The chapter supports the following events:

  • Golf Outing - supporting the annual Scholarship Program
  • CIO Forum
  • Future in IT Program with local colleges
  • Internship Program with local Magnet Schools
  • Alliance with National center for Women in Information Technology - Annual Program

2. What are your goals for your term as the President of the SIM Central Connecticut chapter?
Goals for 2014: 

  • Each Board member should form a functioning committee to support their area
    • Recruit volunteers to your committee - drive interest in the chapter
    • This will lead to people interested in the Board for years to come
  • Each Board member should have 2-3 goals for the year
    • Let's focus on Continuous Improvement on a year-over-year basis
    • Concentrate on what works
    • Borrow "Best Practice" ideas from other chapters and use them
    • Don't re-invent the wheel if we don't have to

3. What are the hottest trends in the IT industry? 

  • Constant security vigilance
  • The recruiting pipeline - work to get young people in STEM programs. Especially young women (SIM Women!!)
  • Raise awareness of current issues with "Thought Leadership" at our chapter meetings - great programs drive membership
4. What challenges is your chapter currently facing? 
  • Growth and member retention
  • RLF Member Retention
  • Recruitment of high profile CIO's.  
5. What is the one piece of advice you will give the next President of the SIM Central Connecticut chapter?  

Focus on continuous improvement. We all do that in our business and it translates well to a chapter.
