Springtime:  Leadership 3.0, Session 1 at GraybaR


March 22 marked the first session of the first year of Leadership 3.0, the NextGen Leadership Development Program established by the St. Louis Chapter of SIM.  Johnnie Foster and Bob Rouse led the session, Accepting the Challenge of Leadership.  Highlights were a discussion of Leadership. Pam Welker, CIO at Royal Canin and Bill George’s ideas about True North. 26 people are enrolled in Leadership 3.0 2017.




Leadership 3.0 Session 1 Summary


Session 1 began with an exercise to enable class interaction—a “bingo” like  game with the goal of meeting as many classmates with unique experience.  Individuals then introduced themselves.  Most bio’s are available for reading in the class Dropbox--Interesting folks with interesting backgrounds.


Leadership 3.0 is not a lecture series.  Participants share their own experiences and address specific topics and readings.  A “full contact” event!   We discussed leadership and what it takes to be a leader.  Each of us has our own personal style, built on self-awareness, continuous learning and being present at each moment.


Pam Welker, CIO at Royal Canin, discussed her own leadership journey.  Two major practices:

  1. Be bold: take the risk to make significant progress.
  2. Build that network: provides personal support, accelerates your own learning and make those contacts important to business success.


We discussed the concept of True North, created by Gill George, former CEO of Medtronics and Professor at Harvard.  Leadership is a life-long learning commitment, keeping on top of business and technology developments and being in touch with the people and relationships that take the leadership journey with you.  Discovering your own strengths, balancing your business and personal life, and the work that brings you the culture and purpose you need.


We suggest that each participant keep a journal of their year with Leadership 3.0.  What do you put in the journal?  You will hear new ideas you want to keep.  There will be times someone will say something that strikes you as valuable, capture it.  Or explain an idea with words that sing to you: write them down.  We urge you to take a few moments each day and write down what you learned that day.


We also urge everyone to meet with their manager and/or sponsor and bring them up to date on Session 1.   They are investing in you; ask them what they hope you will accomplish.



Thoughts on Session 2


Session 2 will address Power, Politics and Influence.  The session will be led by Lawrence Casey and Becky Davidson.  You will be receiving the Agenda and Reading in the next few week.  May 17 on your calendar.
