Leadership Spotlight: Mark Buttice, President SIM Colorado Chapter

1. Please provide a brief overview of the Colorado chapter
Although the Colorado chapter of SIM has been around well over a decade, it has had a resurgence over the past 3 years. Over this period of time, our chapter had doubled, and then doubled again. Our board contains 11 dedicated individuals and our chapter has grown to 130 members.

2. What are/were your goals for your term as the President of the Colorado chapter?
Our broad goal is to continue our growth, continue providing quality programs and to institute some of the practices of the larger chapters. This includes instituting an outreach program within our membership, increasing our community involvement, attracting national speakers and utilizing sponsorship in a responsible manner.

3. What are the hottest trends in the IT industry?
Technology is strong in Colorado as evident of the 2% unemployment rate in the Denver community and the number of start-ups in this space. Our trends are similar to those experienced throughout our nation.

4. What challenges is your chapter currently facing?
Regarding current membership, our biggest challenges are continuing to provide quality programs and opportunities to our members and tapping on their talent through an effective outreach program. Beyond this, we struggle with effectively attracting active members from larger organizations and blending the needs of large company CIOs with emerging company CIOs.

5. What is the one piece of advice you will give to the next President of the Colorado chapter?
Clearly set a vision and the board will do the rest.

Hurricane Sandy

As you are aware, Hurricane Sandy has had a tremendous impact on the lives and livelihoods of our SIM members and many others up and down the east coast.  Many experienced destruction to their homes, days without power, delays returning from SIMposium and loss of loved ones.

It’s with a sad heart that we inform you that Hurricane Sandy took the life of one of our SIM members, Beth Everett.  Beth and her husband, Rich, were killed on the evening of October 29 as a result of a tree falling on their vehicle.  They leave behind four teenage children.

Beth was one of SIM Women’s founding members and a long-time SIM New Jersey Chapter member.  She was an incredible example of generosity. She gave her time consistently to SIM Women, was a global board member for the Healthcare Business Women's Association and served on the board for the local Habitat for Humanity.  Below is the address for a fund established to help Beth's children.

SIM Headquarters is keeping Beth’s children, family and all others affected by the storm in our thoughts and prayers.  If you know some one that has been affected by the storm, please reach out to them with support.

I have served as the Chapter President since June 2008. With the support of a very dedicated and committed leadership team, we have grown not only in size but also in reputation and offerings.  read more…

3.  What are the hottest trends in the IT industry?
The following are some exciting trends:

a)  Intelligent and Interactive Surfaces

4.  What challenges is your chapter currently facing?
Atlanta has quite a few organizations for senior IT executives to pick from. Though SIM offers very unique and distinctive value propositions, strong and sustained marketing efforts are required to create greater value awareness about the organization. While we have made great strides in enhancing visibility, we still have a long way to go.

5.  What is the one piece of advice you will give to the next President of the Atlanta chapter?
Stay the course and be patient.

RLF Early Registration Discount Extended

The early registration discount for SIM's Regional Leadership Forum has been extended until Friday, November 30.  Register on or before November 30 and receive a $500 savings.

During SIMpoisum, the RLF Facilitators were recently asked the following question:

Which one book from the 2013 booklist would have the greatest impact on an individual who has not gone through the program, and why?

If you are about to embark on the RLF journey or looking for your next book to read, below you will find some some of intriguing responses and insights from our facilitators.

June Drewry – RLF Director and Southeast Facilitator
"Crucial Conversations" - The reader can make use of the information immediately. It helps him/her understand what is happening and why; eliminate emotionally upsetting clashes; feel more in control of situations; and improve relationship skills.

Bart Bolton - Northeast Facilitator
Per an informal survey I've taken of two NE RLF classes (2010 and 2011), the overwhelming choice as to which book represents the essence of the RLF program is "True North" by Bill George. If they could read only one book on the entire list to represent the RLF,  that was their choice and I would agree.

Phil Zwieg - CAIT Facilitator
As for me, "Crucial Conversations" holds a small edge.  It is a book whose subject matter is often the most difficult for individuals to deal with, so they gain a significant amount of practical insight.  Much like "True North", but with a different perspective.

Mike Rochelle – Southwest Facilitator
That would depend on the participant; however, I’d go for "Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl.  Meaning is the means by which we measure all activities and this book helps participants begin the process of learning at the right place.

Cliff Higbee - RLF Director and Midwest Facilitator
Tough question!  I would probably go with "Crucial Conversations" because it has so much impact on every one of our relationships.  And the quality of our lives is dependent on the quality of our relationships, it is critical to know how to make relationships work.  This book really helps with that.

Bob Rouse - RLF Director and Northwest Facilitator
The magic of the Reading List in the interaction/blending of all the ideas encountered--and winding up with that "geodesic dome" that fits together for each person. But if I had to pick only one book, "True North".  It is about authentic leadership, how that is personal, how it unlocks the leadership lens for each of us.

This question sparked a lot of great dialog with varied answers among the facilitators.  To view the entire 2013 booklist, click HERE.

Leader of the Year and Paper Award Winners Announced

SIMposium 2012 gave SIM members, and others in the industry, the opportunity to learn and network.  It also gave us the opportunity to recognize the leaders in our association and industry.  During SIMposium, the 2012 Leaders of the Year were announced, as well as, the Paper Competition winners.  They are as follows:

2012 Leader of the Year Award Winners
John Cole, a managing partner at Farr Systems and SIM member since 1987, was a founding member of the Memphis SIM Chapter, a member of the Chicago Chapter and most recently a Dallas Fort Worth Chapter member. John’s peers nominated him for Chapter Leader of the Year for his many years of contributions and commitment  to SIM and all the various roles he has taken locally and nationally, including Members-In-Transition liaison, Regional Leadership Forum speaker and supporter, community outreach and fundraising champion, CIO Summit panelist and recruiter and mentor.

Jeff SkulskyVice President of Information Systems and Technologies at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and a longtime SIM member, just recently completed his term as the New Jersey Chapter President. As the founder and champion of the national Members-In-Transition program, Jeff devotes much of his personal time to providing program awareness, as well as elevating the level of support and the resources to SIM members planning their next career move. Driven by his passion to help, Jeff has initiated nearly all of the benefits now available to SIM members in transition, along with the formation a governance committee, meant to help local Chapters grow their own MIT programs.

2012 Paper Competition Winners
This year's Academic Paper Awards Competition has recently concluded, and we received many worthy submissions, making the competition stiff. After carefully critiquing each paper, the judges panel, consisting of Mary Sumner, Richard Welke, Omar El Sawy, Jack Becker and Steve Hufford, selected the following Paper Competition Winner.

Dr. Donald Marchand of IMD and Jim Barrington of Novartis for their paper titled "SMS For Life: A CIO Led Public-Private Collaboration to Prevent Stock-Outs of Life Saving Malaria Drugs in Africa." The paper received an average of 4.6 out of a possible 5 points across all criteria. Dr. Marchand and Mr. Barrington have graciously asked SIM to donate their $1,000 travel stipend to an anti-malaria foundation. Read more about the foundation HERE.

Dr. Thompson Teo and Dr. Sojung Kim received honorable mention for their paper titled "Meeting the Challenges of Open Source: Case Study of Korean E-government Open Source Framework." The paper received an average of 3.68 out of a possible 5 points across all criteria.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Unlocking Business Innovation in the Social Enterprise

The SIMposium 2012 Program Committee has announced that Jim Stikeleather, Executive Strategist – Innovation, Dell Services will speak in the Tuesday morning General Session.  Steve Jobs famously said: "… you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.”

The goal of this session is to provide some of that "whatever” – the influences on the future of business and the implications they have on the future of IT. Changes in how we structure enterprises, how we manage, the nature of capitalism, new knowledge of economics and increasing new models for information delivery all will change the face of IT. While prediction, especially about the future is difficult, preparation is not.

We hope to see you at SIMposium 2012, October 28-30, 2012 at the Gaylord Texan Hotel and Convention Center in Dallas, Texas.  For more information or to register, click HERE.

Futurist Daniel Burrus to
Speak at SIMposium

The SIMposium 2012 Program Committee has announced that Daniel Burrus, considered one of the world's leading technology forecasters and business strategists, will speak at the Tuesday General Session.  In 1983, Burrus became the first and only futurist to accurately identify the twenty technologies that would become the driving force of business and economic change for decades to come. Since then, he has continued to establish a worldwide reputation for his exceptional record of predicting the future of technological change and its direct impact on the business world.  SIMposium 2012 attendees will experience what Burrus calls Flash Foresights—bursts of accurate insights about the future that reveal new and radically different ways of solving problems, crafting must-have products, creating high-demand services or building new lines of business.  Be sure to visit the SIMposium 2012 website for more information on all of the speakers and sessions that will be offered at SIMposium 2012 -- held October 28-30 at the Gaylord Texan Hotel and Convention Center in Dallas, Texas.  Register today to take advantage of 2 ½ days of educational sessions with more than 50 speakers.  Join us for this event designed by and for CIOs!  For the full agenda, go to http://www.simposium2012.org/agenda.html.  To register, visit www.simposium2012.org.

How to Build the Next Gen of IT Leaders

SIM Chair, Jim Knight and Past SIM Chair and current RLF Director, June Drewry joined SIM member and host of CIO Talk Radio, Sanjog Aul, to discuss the Next Generation of IT leaders.

Today’s uncertain times, with so much complexity and change, have been tough on our IT leaders. But these challenges show no signs of easing in the years to come. So how do we prepare the next generation of IT leaders? Will there be enough time, funds, or capacity to properly prepare and train them? What abilities will be expected of them? What are organizations doing to prepare the path this new breed of leader must tread? What external resources, tools, or programs are being developed for this task?

Advanced Practices Council (APC) Releases "Wisdom of Clouds”

SIM’s APC just released its report, "Wisdom of Clouds,” by Bala Iyer and John Henderson. The authors describe six cloud computing benefits for realizing competitive advantage with cloud computing. The report concludes with a recommended set of actions companies can deploy to mitigate risks, achieve benefits using cloud technology, and position themselves to fully leverage business networks. You can download the report by visiting SIM’s Online Store.

Advanced Practices Council Releases "Delivering Effective Enterprise Architecture at Chubb Insurance”

Although the number of non-IT business executives who can describe the value of their firms’ enterprise architecture (EA) is probably quite small, Chubb Insurance executives are not in that group.

Chubb’s 10-year journey towards comprehensive EA that enables the firm to move confidently into a world of rapidly changing markets and technologies is not completed. But it serves as an excellent example of the benefits of investing in EA, especially in a federated organization with multiple lines of business accustomed to operating independently.

APC member Jim Knight shared Chubb’s EA journey with APC members (apc.simnet.org), who then requested that we capture the story in a case study. This case study is now available at no charge to SIM members at the online store

Assessing Cloud Readiness At Continental AG

Despite the growing attention being given to cloud computing by researchers and practitioners, the deployment of cloud computing is still in its infancy. For this to change, client companies need to know which of their IT services are appropriate for cloud computing. They often lack a sufficiently specific, yet applicable method to determine their cloud readiness and to identify and assess which IT services are candidates for moving to the cloud. This article describes a field-tested method for assessing the cloud readiness of an organization’s IT services.

SIM Advanced Practices Council Member Publishes Book on Leadership

How can the very busy CIO of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) carve out time to write a book on leadership? Somehow, Linda Cureton, long-time SIM and Advanced Practices Council member, has done so.

"Leadership is an art,” declares Cureton in The Leadership Muse. It’s difficult to define what makes a leader good, true and beautiful. But, just like great art, we know a great leader when we meet one. In Cureton’s book, a rich chronicle of encounters with a host of great leaders, she teaches us how to recognize the extraordinary artistry of leadership (and the great leaders) in our lives, in our everyday dealings, and in ourselves.

Translating ancient wisdom into 21st century insight, Cureton invokes and introduces us to the Leadership Muse, who moves through the inspired lives and actions of the best, and perhaps most unsuspecting, leaders. Cureton tells us that there are leadership lessons (and Leadership Muses) all around us and shares those she has learned from a diverse group of people, places, and situations – from Pythagoras, to Star Trek, to Odysseus, to the unassuming hummingbird, to contemporary superheroes, to her high-school music teacher, to her grandmother. Along with her accounts of how the Muse appeared to her, Cureton teaches us how to recognize the Muses in our journeys and how to become leaders capable of heroic feats of wisdom, grace, and courage.

Cureton’s message is hard to deny: Our world needs leaders who are capable and willing to listen to the messages the Leadership Muse sends throughout history, during everyday moments, and from ordinary people.
