Leadership Spotlight: SIM Portland Chapter, Pradeep Kumar

1. Please provide an overview of the SIM Portland chapter.
SIM Portland has been in existence for over 25 years and has a year-to-year membership range of about 150.   The membership comes from a diverse array of businesses representing high-tech, banking, law firms, manufacturing, retail and healthcare.  SIM Portland monthly meetings are held from September to May each year.

Some of the highlights of SIM Portland’s community outreach and philanthropy includes:

  • Over $500,000 awarded since 2001 to deserving students in the information pipeline at four local Universities. The lion's share of these funds are generated by SIM Portland’s highly acclaimed and well attended Annual Golf tournament. Read more…

What are your goals for your term as the President of the SIM Portland chapter?
One of the major challenges in Portland chapters is member engagement and retention.  The single monthly meeting format needs to be diversified.  To that goal, we have launched three new initiatives to increase member engagement:

  • SIM Portland Leadership Coaching Council: An initial set of 6 senior CIOs have been recruited as mentors for SIM members.  In this engagement SIM members are partnered with a CIO for monthly meetings for 10 months to help them determine their career paths and goals.  We will expand this program next year.Read more…

What are the hottest trends in the industry?
To paraphrase the tagline for this year’s SIMposium, “The Future is now!”, the IT industry is rapidly evolving in no small part by the maturing of a cacophony of emerging technologies. One of the trends is for “mobile first” in application development to support another trend – the remote teleworker.  Read more…

What challenges is your chapter currently facing?
Membership retention and engagement referred to in a previous question

What is one piece of advice you will give the next President of the SIM Portland chapter?
SIM Portland and SIM in general tend to attract the older professionals, but to make SIM relevant we need to find speakers and organize forums that will speak to the younger generations.  Hence my advice is “get out of our comfort zone, attend meetups and forums in town to figure out what makes them tick and then articulate a direction that will speak to a more diverse membership.

CyberSecurity Leadership Unclear in Majority of Organizations
A big thanks to all SIM members who participated in this year’s IT Trends Study. We know your time is quite valuable and we truly appreciate your sharing it with your fellow members!

SIM’s IT Trends Research Team is busy preparing this year’s findings, in which 1213 SIM members from 801 unique organizations (up from 785 in 2015) participated, including 490 CIOs (up from 485).  Some cybersecurity-specific questions were included for the first time this year.  Some of the findings raise concerns:

Only 45.8% of 705 responding organizations report having a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) or equivalent position. This is a surprisingly low percentage given the attention cybersecurity has received the past several years by regulators and the media. There is some evidence that organizations investing more heavily in IT are more likely to have a CISO, but organization size appears to be a stronger indicator of whether an organization has a position dedicated to cybersecurity.  Read more…
