Leadership Spotlight: Joe Malfesi, President SIM Capital Area Chapter
1. Please provide an overview of the SIM Capital Area chapter.
The Capital Area Chapter is one of the oldest SIM chapters and currently has about 100 members. Our geography runs from Baltimore, MD, through Washington DC, and down to Richmond, VA. Membership is nearly equally divided from the three governmental areas. Read more…

2. What are your goals for your term as the President of the SIM Capital Area chapter?
I have been serving as the Chairman of the Board (that’s the title we use rather than President) for two and a half years. Last year, we completely revised our By-laws and held an election in which I was voted into the position. So, technically, this is my first term as an elected officer. Read more…

3. What are the hottest trends in the industry?
We’re no different than most chapters: Security, Big Data, Predictive Analytics. Our chapter also focuses on topics such as motivating the next generation, crowdsourcing and the Internet of Things as topics that intrigue the newly appointed CIOs.

4. What challenges is your chapter currently facing?
Our biggest challenge is finding a venue and time that meets the requirements of our membership. Traffic in the Washington Metro area is one of the worst in the country. Holding a meeting in Virginia will bring in the Virginia members, but not usually from Maryland etc.

5. What is the one piece of advice you will give the next President of the SIM Capital Area chapter?
We’re an all-volunteer organization with not enough volunteers. There is so much to do and the Board can’t do it all. Keep the lines of communication open and constantly reach out to your membership and partners.

Renew your SIM Membership Now!
Renewal season is upon us. Here are some important reminders:

All members have a 90 day grace period from Jan. 1 - March 31 in which to renew their membership without penalty. Everyone has full access to SIMnet.org for the duration of the renewal grace period. Chapters collecting dues directly have until March 31 to send all payments and membership rosters into Headquarters for processing. Chapters should send dues and reports in monthly or more often. Please do not hold renewals until the end of March. If anyone has questions or needs assistance, please contact George Fisher at SIM HQ, gfisher@simnet.org or 856-316-0925

Act now to register for RLF in 2016
Registration remains open for most 2016 Regional Leadership Forum (RLF) programs, with $500 “early bird” discounts still available for three of the forums.

“Since our practice is to accept participants right up until the first day of an available program, there’s still time to enroll in 2016 forums around the country,” said Phil Zwieg, RLF Director. “But register soon because some programs are at or nearing capacity and most are beginning within the next 4 to 5 weeks.”

SIM members receive a $600 discount per participant, and SIM members can also receive an additional $500 discount per participant if registration is paid by the early bird deadlines that remain available for some programs. Non-SIM members may also take advantage of any $500 early bird discount.

The 2016 RLF programs, dates and remaining early bird deadlines include:

  • Mid-Atlantic RLF … February 23 – September 22
  • Midwest RLF … February 22 – October 4
  • New York Metro RLF (This program is filled to capacity … please register for another program location)
  • Northeast RLF … February 25 – September 23
  • Northeast Spring RLF … March 17 – November 11 (Early bird deadline of Feb. 15, 2016 is still available.)
  • Pacific Northwest RLF … March 14 – September 27
  • Pacific Southwest RLF … March 10 – September 23
  • South Central RLF … April 20 – November 3 (Early bird deadline of March 1, 2016 is still available.)
  • Southeast RLF … April 14 – December 9 (Early bird deadline of Feb. 15, 2016 is still available.)

SIM’s RLF program takes high-potential individuals and helps them develop their own authentic leadership style and the emotional intelligence, personal strengths, and core competencies that define true leaders.

Chapter Challenge Contest is Coming Soon!

Last year’s SIM IT Trends Study was record-breaking!
Last year’s study achieved an all-time record response. Member participation made this possible, so thanks to everyone who completed last year’s questionnaire. The $895 Comprehensive Report and SIMposium slidedecks are free downloads to members at the bottom of this page (login required).

The chapter competition will help us set new records in 2016!
The 37th anniversary SIM IT Trends Study goes live in early April. We’re planning on more individual prizes and bigger cash awards in the Chapter Challenge Contest (and bragging rights too). Is your chapter ready? Stay tuned for details!
