Leadership Spotlight: SIM Charlotte Region Past President, Jeff Stovall

1. Please tell us a little about yourself.
I am currently the Chief Information Officer for the City of Charlotte and as the city’s first CIO, I have held this position since 2008.  Prior to the role in Charlotte, I was in the role of Director of IT Merger Integration Planning with Sprint and held several executive roles (both in IT and in other functions) over seven years at the company headquarters in Kansas.  read more…

2. Provide a brief overview of your chapter and your role within the chapter.
The Charlotte Region chapter is only five years old and is approaching 100 members.  Our chapter is growing in size and in event programming.  Charlotte is known widely for our “field trips” to SIM members’ companies to see how they employ IT within their facilities.  Our chapter had its first golf tournament last year to raise money for regional STEM organizations.  read more…

3. What are the hottest trends in industry?
In the public sector, the hottest trends seem to be body-worn video, drones, and real-time analytics.  All of these point toward broader trends in machine-enhanced situational awareness and response.  The ability to extend human capabilities with robotics, Internet-connected sensors and networked machine-learning are just beginning to impact the nature of how we do work.

4. What challenges is your chapter facing?
Competition.  As Charlotte has grown, more organizations have appeared which compete for the time and attention of our IT senior leaders.  Goals and activities have started to overlap in a way that can make it increasingly difficult to distinguish the value proposition for the Charlotte SIM chapter.  read more…

5. How can a chapter member get
more involved in the Charlotte Region chapter?
It’s easy in Charlotte; we are a welcoming bunch!  The Board of Directors has recently expanded Advisory Board roles to create new programs, work with sponsors, and to engage in more fun; we’d like to add to the number of events we conduct each year. read more…

Plan Now—Include RLF in Your New Year’s Resolutions and Budget

During 2015, 293 professionals achieved their resolution to advance career and personal journeys by graduating from SIM’s Regional Leadership Forum (RLF) program.  As 2016 approaches, many of them are urging others to make RLF a top priority for 2016.

“RLF is a New Year’s resolution that is guaranteed to stick – for years to come,” said David Day, a recent graduate of the Southeast RLF program held in St. Petersburg, FL.  “Once you make the commitment to RLF, there’s no holding back.  It has a profound effect, not just on graduates but on everyone around us.  It’s going to be amazing what we do from here.” read more...

Executive RLF a Standing-Room-Only Draw at SIMposium
Breakout session attendees experience a taste of the program by “Assessing Your Political Style”

A standing-room-only crowd of SIM members and RLF graduates learned about the 2016 Executive RLF program and assessed their political style as part of a breakout session on the final day of the 2015 SIMposium. The session, facilitated by CIO Hall of Fame members June Drewry and Darwin John, enabled participants to experience SIM’s newest leadership development program designed to help senior leaders build executive capacities.

“It was important to allow attendees to interactively experience a facet of the program first-hand,” said Drewry, SIM’s Leadership Development Institute director and Management Council member. read more...
