June 2016
Name: Caren Shiozaki
SIM Role: SIM Vice Chair and Cybersecurity Lead

Question 1  |  Question 2  |  Question 3  |  Question 4  |  Question 5

1. What is your background in cybersecurity?
Most of my professional life has been in Financial Services.  Given the nature of the industry, how highly it is regulated, and the importance of maintaining customer trust and confidence - there's always been a concern about security. The industry's concern has multiplied as the digital environment has evolved.  And for me personally, I find that I'm also more risk-aware of cybersecurity issues from a consumer and citizen perspective. The responsibility for cybersecurity management has fallen under my jurisdiction in the companies for which I've served as CIO.  Additionally, I hold the CGEIT (Governance of Enterprise IT) certification, so having a solid understanding of security as it relates to corporate governance is mandatory.

2. Why did you decide to start the cybersecurity SIG?

Another hat that I wear is Vice Chair of the SIM National Board.  We are always looking at ways to bring added value to our members.  One way in which to do this is by expanding our core offerings of programs.  There are a number of excellent Special Interest Groups running, but we didn't have one focused on Cybersecurity.  Based on feedback we had received from Chapter Leaders, there was interest.  When Steve Hufford (SIM's Chief Executive) was looking for a volunteer to help get this off the ground, I was more than happy to step forward.  I feel strongly that being adept at dealing with cybersecurity issues is a critical skill for anyone in senior leadership positions - and especially so if you are leading the business of technologies for your company.

3. How will the Cybersecurity SIG be structured?

We plan to host bimonthly meetings for our SIG members, and we have a number of great webinars and speakers lined up for the remainder of 2016.  In fact, our inaugural webinar (“Personal Privacy or National Security: Can We Have Both?”) is just a few weeks away, on Tuesday, June 21st (12:00 PST3:00 EST).  We’ve posted information about that event and others on our SIG’s event page on simnet, which can be found HERE.  If you like what you see, I encourage you to join the SIG and register for our inaugural event. In addition to our planned webinars, we are also planning and running a Risk Management track at this year’s SIMposium.  Information about those sessions can be found on our SIG’s event page and on SIMposium’s website HERE.  We look forward to seeing you there.

We are also actively working on offering additional services to keep our SIG actively engaged, including a current library of information assets and an online collaboration forum.  Stay tuned!

4. What benefits would a member get from joining the Cybersecurity SIG?
I know there are a number of groups focused on cybersecurity.  But many of these require fairly high membership fees, or are associated with a subscription to a research and advisory service – which not everyone can afford.  It’s for that reason that we are dedicated to building and sustaining a group that gives you access to high quality, relevant, and actionable discussions, information assets, and networks, all as part of your existing SIM membership.

5. What does a member need to do to join the Cybersecurity SIG?

Simply visit our pages on simnet (HERE) and sign up!  Remember, you cannot attend the web conferences and access our information and tools unless you're a registered member of the Cybersecurity SIG.
