826CHI encourages a desire and cultivates the skills for students to write their own paths forward, undefined by circumstance. We provide collaborative, imaginative, interdisciplinary, and inquiry-based writing programs to Chicago students. By professionally publishing our students’ work, we provide them with a tangible product of their hard work that they can share with the wider community and foster dialogue and understanding beyond their peers. Creative self-expression is transformative for any youth, but we give priority to students from low-income families and English Language Learners whose voices have been historically marginalized.

826CHI is a chapter of a growing national 826 network of writing and tutoring centers now seven cities strong. Each chapter maintains its grassroots origin and is locally run and funded, each with their own Board of Directors. All our programs are free of charge. Our work is made possible by supporters who believe that strong communication skills are fundamental to future success in any field. Financial support of 826CHI directly enhances the education of thousands of youth each year. 826CHI would is honored to participate in the SIM Women Leadership Summit as we are looking to further develop STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) programs.

826CHI shares its space with the Wicker Park Secret Agent Supply Co., a store with a not-so-secret mission. Our unique products encourage creative writing, imaginative play, and trigger new adventures for agents of all ages. Every purchase supports 826CHI's free programming, so visit us at 1276 N. Milwaukee Ave in Wicker Park or online to pick up spy glasses, fake moustaches, our latest student publications, and much more!
