Membership Criteria

IT Leader - As senior information management professionals in the public and private sector, IT Leaders provide insight into the multitude of challenges facing today’s technology managers and practical insight into the best practices for addressing these challenges. IT Leaders are encouraged to contribute industry expertise and actively participate in all facets of the local Chapter, including membership and leadership in the Board and Committees. Examples of IT Leader positions include CIO, CTO, VP of IM/IT/IS, and their direct reports.

Emerging leaders are also eligible for membership and IT Leaders are encouraged to sponsor emerging leaders for membership and participation in our Chapter so they can benefit from the learning and professional networking opportunities.

Non-IT Executive - Non-IT Executives who actively influence the role and direction of information technology in their organizations provide insights and perspectives that complement the IT Leader’s and bring non-IT subject area expertise to SIM. Like IT Leaders, they participate in all facets of the local Chapter. Examples of Non-IT Executive positions include CEO, CFO, COO, President, etc.

Academic - Full-time university faculty members who make a significant contribution to the IT field bring valuable insight into trends and new technology directions. Additionally, Academic members serve as a critical connection between the university and business worlds. Academic members participate in all facets of SIM. Examples of Academic positions include Professor, Dean, etc.

Emeritus Members - Emeritus status is for retired professionals who were previously active SIM International members and who are not currently working more than 500 hours per year in a for-profit role.

In-Transit Members – In-Transit status is for those who were previously active SIM International members and who are currently in transit between jobs. They may work and retain this status providing they do not work more than 500 hours in a paid capacity.

Regional Leadership Forum (RLF) - Applications for chapter membership by Regional Leadership Forum. (RLF) participants will be automatically accepted for the year in which they participate in RLF and for the following year. Membership is available to RLF graduates for subsequent years, provided the applicant’s job has not changed as to preclude him/her from participating in the Society. SIMI provides for the first year free membership of SIMI. That is a discount of $160 (or $80 for not-for-profit companies). For those who choose the “Full” Toronto SIM Chapter membership, Toronto SIM will match this SIMI discount. It is not offered for PAYG Membership.

Vendor/Consultant Participation - In concert with SIM International, the Toronto SIM Chapter welcomes senior-level vendor and consultant participation. With the continued fast pace change and growth in technology and business environments, IT vendor and consulting leaders often provide or can recruit technology and practice expertise to senior-level IT discussions and programs. Vendor membership is individual only.

Additional Guidelines for Vendors and Consultants:

Senior Consultant and Vendor sales personnel may join SIM if their experience and thought leadership adds value to the learning and professional networking goals of the Chapter. Applications will be approved on a case by case basis by the Membership Committee.

Vendors and Consultant members are strictly prohibited from actively marketing their services while participating in SIM Chapter activities, unless they sponsor the event. In such cases, marketing efforts will be limited to a brief presentation to the group, collateral materials and signage.

Vendors and consultants may find sponsorship of SIM events, programs, and research enables them to increase exposure to the network of companies that are represented within SIM.

Practitioner members are encouraged to reach out to members in the Vendor and Consultant categories to learn about their services as appropriate.

When SIM practitioner (IT Leader) membership category is at or below 65%, membership will be closed to vendors and consultants until the ratio is re-established. Then vendors and consultants will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. When a moratorium is in effect, Vendors and Consultants can override this restriction and become SIM members by getting two new IT Leaders to join SIM. Check with a SIM Board Member for details.
