The Microservices Era Begins!

Software applications have been developed in monolithic forms for years as the underlying infrastructure and operating systems have changed. The evolution from operating systems to virtualization and now cloud has a recognizable pattern of the next major era deriving from the prior era. Now that we are in our 10th year of public cloud computing, the forces are aligning for a next major wave of how applications are created and operated and that is the era of microservices. This presentation will be an introduction to the microservices trend and why it matters to all information technology leaders.
Speaker: Matt McIlwain, Managing Director at Madrona Venture Group
Matt McIlwain is a Managing Director at Madrona Venture Group, an early-stage venture capital firm based in Seattle, Washington. He has been a venture capitalist since 2000, focusing on software-driven companies. Matt currently serves on several boards in the enterprise and big data arena including 2nd Watch, Apptio, Booster, Envelop VR, ExtraHop, Dato, Igneous Systems, Qumulo, Smartsheet, and Skytap. Matt also co-teaches a course on entrepreneurship in the University of Washington Computer Science Department and is on the board of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Washington Policy Center. Previously, Matt served on the boards of Isilon Systems (NASDAQ: ISLN, acquired by EMC for $2.4 billion), Farecast (acquired by Microsoft), World Wide Packets (acquired by Ciena), PayScale (acquired by Warburg Pincus), iConclude (acquired by Opsware), Performant (acquired by Mercury Interactive), and Tier3 (acquired by CenturyLink Savvis).
Before joining Madrona in 2000, Matt was Vice President of Business Process for the Genuine Parts Company (NYSE:GPC). He also was an engagement manager at McKinsey & Company, concentrating on strategy and marketing in technology-driven sectors and prior to that worked in investment banking at Credit Suisse.
He is a graduate of Dartmouth College, holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
