IT project failure remains an enormous problem for our industry, even though sixty years has passed since the first large, software development program (OS 360) was mired in trouble. No other industry has ever suffered such a persistent record of failure, in spite of trillions of dollars of investment and practice. How could this be?

In this presentation, Frank Wander, former CIO and author of Transforming IT Culture, will share what he discovered after leading five turnaround transformations across companies and industries. Although IT is quick to be blamed, IT failure remains, in fact, a failure of culture: Corporate Culture. It is difficult for IT to succeed in traditional corporations, where management believes professionals are interchangeable parts, and processes and technology are what matters. Unfortunately, this has created a destructive blind spot: the human factors that unlock effortless collaboration, productivity, and IT success are unseen.

To remove this blind spot, Wander will share a proven recipe for building a high performing culture. Attendees will learn why culture is a critical driver of collaborative success and how to design one that unlocks productivity, cross-functional collaboration and division-wide success. In addition, he will introduce the human factors that drive productivity and employee engagement. Here, the speaker will share the servant leadership practices he successfully refined across companies, and will reveal the psychology and neuroscience that underpin them. Interestingly, talent remains the single largest operating expense in IT, so leaders who develop expertise in the human factors and cultural design will be able to unlock vast pools of untapped human potential. IT leaders must create organizations where the professionals flourish. Until then, project failure and underperformance will remain far too common.

About the Speaker:

Frank Wander
Author, Former CIO and Founder of the IT Excellence Institute

Frank Wander is an author, noted speaker, former CIO, and founder of The IT Excellence Institute.  After spending many years transforming failed, or failing, IT divisions across corporations, Wander realized there was a consistent pattern to those failures: unsupportive and dysfunctional corporate cultures that were toxic to IT success. This awareness led him to write a book for Wiley Publishing, titled Transforming IT Culture: How to Use Social Intelligence, Human Factors and Collaboration to Create an IT Department that Outperforms.  He is an expert on IT, and a noted turnaround transformation specialist, who is able to run the “human infrastructure” as proficiently as the processes and technology.

Frank was Chief Information Officer at three different companies, and has held a wide array of leadership roles in a career spanning 33 years. He has deep functional expertise in IT, Client Services, Operations and Management Consulting.  Wander is a sought after speaker and panelist at industry events who connects with his audience by sharing meaningful stories, and proven strategies for creating IT Organizational Effectiveness. He is currently helping corporations transform their IT divisions, and working to build the first ever tools to manage the human factors of productivity.
