The Changing Role of the CIO and the IT Function: Practical Insight

Join us for an engaging session on the topic that continues to be top-of-mind among CIOs and IT professionals. Tory Burch CIO Mike Giresi will elevate the discussion from rhetoric to proven practice as he shares his personal experience and insight on how his own role evolved.
Mike will talk about evolving the role and why it can’t be driven from a desire to increase influence or to "get seat at the table.” That kind of thinking is upside down -- it’s about doing what is right for the business, and forging strong partnerships across functions so that you can leverage each other’s strengths.
Learn more about his approach to IT leadership, which embraces the company’s existing creative culture and rapidly changing environment, and his focus is on establishing the team as key enablers for the over-arching business strategy. Several key elements for evolving and elevating the IT group at any organization will be covered. These include specific qualities and skill sets to cultivate across the team and how they affect recruitment and retention strategies. Because no two organizational cultures or businesses are the same, there is no formulaic approach to building relevance for IT. Thematically, however, there are some common elements that can guide your own planning, and these will be covered as points for discussion.

As CIO of Tory Burch, Mike Giresi oversees all technology initiatives that address the unique business and operational needs for one of the fastest-growing fashion brands in the world. A core focus of his responsibility is to ensure that all IT operational strategies and initiatives align with and drive business earnings and operational excellence. As an element of this, he oversees the identification and implementation of new infrastructure and enterprise systems in support of and in partnership with overall business strategy.
Mike's leadership philosophy is to encourage cross-functional collaboration and to hold his team accountable for leveraging a fundamental understanding of the business issues their technology solutions will address. A key element to Mike's successful leadership is championing the process of change. This includes managing the necessary logistical and technological components within the core context of operational, organizational and workplace cultural perspectives.
Mike's track record for leadership spans IT roles as well as general business management and even marketing and sales. He joined Tory Burch from Direct Brands, Inc. where he was Executive Vice President and CIO. In that role, he led global IT, ecommerce and new product development in addition to core ERP responsibilities. Prior to that, he was Senior Vice President and CIO at Godiva Chocolatier.
As a member of the New York chapter of SIM, Mike participates in the Regional Leadership Forum (RLF) and the Programs Committee. In addition, he is an Advisory Board member of the World Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) Forum and a member of the Cash CIO forum. Mike is a charter member of the Infrastructure Executive Council, and a Columbia University IT MBA Mentor. Mike earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Seton Hall University in New Jersey and a Master of Business Administration from Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. He continued his education by graduating from the Concourse Senior IT Executive Management Program and the Society of Information Management Regional Leadership Forum.
