SIM MINNESOTA CHAPTER MEETING

Todd C. Williams

"Finding Gold In Red Projects”

November 18, 2010 – Northland Inn Brooklyn Park, Minnesota

The ability to deliver initiatives that make breakthroughs in business is the differentiator of a truly successful IT department. However, project success rates are very poor. Failing projects are prevalent in all industries. Estimates range from 40 to 75 percent of projects are over budget, late, or fail to deliver the required functionality.

Finding the Gold in Red Projects looks at the value in performing a formal recovery on a red projects. It uses current and historical data, case studies and the presenters twenty-five years' experience of recovering projects to illustrate the process.

This executive-level presentation will:

1. Define the state of today's project management success/failure ratio

2. Show how a formal recovery process can reduce or eliminate failure reoccurrence

3. Provide examples of some common problems and their solutions

4. Outline next steps in improving project performance

Mr. Williams is an entrepreneur, project manager, architect, and businessperson. He has spent twenty years of his professional life recovering red projects. From this experience, he has developed a process to make recoveries efficient and use the results to improve the organization and prevent their reoccurrence. His experience provides a wealth of knowledge on the causes and corrections of failed projects. He has worked in manufacturing and service industries on products used internally and externally. These projects include large-scale system integration of manufacturing systems, equipment integration, web-based collaboration tools, thick clients, and large-scale business systems integration in Taiwan, Singapore, Canada, Israel and the United States with teams dispersed in as many as five countries. AMACOM Press will publish his first book, "Back From Red: Recovering Failed Projects”, in early 2011. Back From Red defines a project audit and recovery process that focuses on root cause correction and prevention.
