“Fail Often to Succeed Sooner”:

Fostering Agility through the Use of Design Thinking

Lori A. Coakley, Ph.D

Increasingly, organizations of all kinds have adopted many practices from the field of design to enhance their innovation capabilities. This is especially true for firms that embrace the values and tenets of agile methodologies.  Design thinking refers to an approach for defining, investigating, and solving complex, ill-structured problems.  It is a systematic process for structuring a problem, gathering information, and generating creative alternatives/solutions; resulting in a “portfolio of promising opportunities.   That process involves three key features to promote the development and implementation of creative ideas:

1.   The use of observation understanding the needs and behaviors of those who use a particular product, service, process, or technology

2.   A method for brainstorming that generates creative options

3.   A process of rapid prototyping (“fail sooner to succeed faster”)

This interactive discussion will move participants through the different stages of design thinking using several activities that foster a better understanding of this unique approach to innovation, and provide a skill set participants can bring back to their own organizations.
